This time we took Carronade VII of Tortola from her home in West Mersea, Essex to Dartmouth in Devon. It took us 42 hrs and we covered 277 nautical miles ... giving us an average speed of 7 knots. Mid-sail we ran the gaunlet of the Round the Island fleet who were heading past St. Catherine's Lighthouse in the opposite direction and we decided that there must be about 10 Portland Bills as it took forever to get past it !!!

Here's a route that the new Garmin Nüvi 770 recorded for me ... From Enniskillen in Ireland to Newcastle via Birmingham ... Unfortunately I learnt the trip log on the 770 is only holds your last 10k points so I lost the first part of our holiday that was in the other direction ... apparently newer models archive it off ... come on Garmin give us this facility in an update :)

From Hoofddorp I followed the N201 out until the Vinkeveense Plassen ... I followed the dyke across it, past the houses of the Nouveau Riche until I hit the A2 ... low and behold the underpass was shut so I had to take a dog leg south and then back up the road that follows the Angstel ...

Today the rain finally stopped and the sun was out ... that meant only one thing ... get the boat out and go for a potter round the canals with some friends :) It was great but there sure was some other traffic around. I did this view in Google Earth ... what do you think ?

German Roadtrip ...

It was a long weekend in Holland so we rented a car and drove down to Germany ... down on the westside via Maastricht, Liege and Luxembourg ... then up the windy Moselle from Trier and a little way down the Rhine to St. Goar ... then back up the eastside via the Nürburgring and the speedy Autobahn to get home ... 1300 kilometers exactly !

Nordschliefe in a Viper ...

Last weekend we went to Germany and visited the world famous Nürburgring and the infamous Nordschliefe or North Ring. We took a ride in the Zakspeed Viper ... this is expensive but I have to say was worth every penny. It took 8 mins to get round and the GPS showed an average speed of 141 kph! You'll notice there is a section in the middle where the trees lost the signal but on the whole this is a good track ...

Today I got to go on a mystery tour ... I took the trusty GPS so I'd know where I'd been ... we actually went tothe Apenheul Primate Park near Apeldoorn ... it was excellent !!!

There is nothing more amazing than the smell that hits you as you step off the train in Hillegom ... the fragrance of flowers growing in the fields is beautiful! This track shows a bike ride from Hillegom via the gardens at Keukenhof to Voorhout ... we were supposed to go back again in a loop (on a route provided by gpstracks.nl) but it started raining!

This weekend I went to CeBIT in Hannover ... 812km there and back with an average speed of 117kph (73mph) and a max of 217kph (135mph - 4mph off the max of the Mercedes C180 Kompressor!) ...

We took a ride in a helicopter (see BOHAG Helcopters) from Männlichen around the mountains of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau and over the glacier. We even landed on the top of a peak (where you see the track cross at the bottom) which was quite spectacular.

We went sledging from Wengernalp (bottom of map) to Wengen (top of map) down the Fox Run trail ... It was a lot of fun with a max speed of 36 MPH (58 KPH) being reached on one section !!! Of course the sat image doesn't show the snow :-(
